11 Budget-Friendly DIY Sofas, Couches and Daybeds

A sofa is the single most expensive thing in most living rooms and usually the least satisfying purchase, because the one you can afford is never quite the one you wanted. Building one changes that math completely. A storage sofa on this list came in around a hundred and twenty dollars using a camping foam pad for the cushion, a patio sofa and love seat took forty five dollars of wood over six free pallets, and a whole sectional started life as two cut down bed frames. You can also size it to your room instead of squeezing a standard length into a space that does not want it. Sofas, couches and daybeds here, and every one links back to the person who built it first.

1. DIY Sofa With Ikea

White L shaped sofa built from cut down bed frames with white seat and back cushions in a bright room by a window

A clean white L-shaped sofa with pale cushions, built from IKEA bed parts rather than any sofa component at all. Maruska starts with continental bed frames in 80 by 200 and 90 by 200 centimeters, takes one short end off each, saws the long sides down to length and refits the ends. The two frames get screwed together at the corner so they cannot creep apart underfoot. Foam mattresses cut down with an insulation knife become the seat, and 50 by 90 centimeter cushions compressed to roughly 40 by 70 make a back firm enough to lean on.

2. Pallet Sectional Sofa With Black Cushion

Pallet sectional sofa with brown cushions along a window wall, with a pallet coffee table and two crate ottomans

A brown cushioned pallet sectional running along a window wall with a pallet coffee table and two crate ottomans in front of it. The frame uses whole uncut pallet skids in an L, so there is almost no cutting involved at all, and a dense foam mattress in a black cover drops on top. The detail that lifts it is the castors: wheels under both the sectional and the coffee table mean the whole arrangement shoves aside in seconds when you need the floor. The original build is credited on the page to Muebles con palets.

3. Pallet Wood Outdoor Sofa

Pallet wood loveseat with a cream cushion, gingham pillows and a white throw, beside a wooden crate side table

A pallet loveseat with a cream painter’s cloth cushion, gingham and shaggy pillows and a wooden crate doing duty as a side table. Funky Junk Interiors mixes 2x4s, 3x3s and whatever pallet boards turned up, which is why the board arrangement in the back reads as a garden gate rather than a tidy panel. Two features are worth copying deliberately: chunky post legs that stop it wobbling on uneven ground, and armrests built wide enough to set a drink on, which removes the need for a side table at all.

4. DIY Patio Sofa And Love Seat

Three panel view of a pallet patio sofa in progress, the black painted plywood frames and the finished red cushioned set

A sofa and love seat built on stacked pallets, skinned in plywood, painted black and topped with deep red cushions. Fabulessly Frugal used six free pallets, four small for the sofa and two larger for the love seat, plus three sheets of plywood at thirty dollars, fifteen dollars of 1×2 trim and brackets at fifty eight cents each. Forty five dollars of wood all in. The recline angle comes from 2×4 back supports on adjustable brackets, and the cushions were bought from Lowe’s first so the frame could be built to fit them.

5. DIY Storage Sofa

A boxy cream sofa on square wooden feet, built in under twenty four hours for about a hundred and twenty dollars. Ana White’s starting point was a foam camping pad, 30 by 72 by three and a half inches, at twenty dollars, which sidesteps the upholstery foam that makes building a sofa uneconomic in the first place. The frame is 2x4s, 2x6s and 2x10s with quarter inch plywood, covered in paint drop cloth. The seat hinges open for bedding storage and the pad is exactly a camping mattress, so it sleeps a guest. The lid strap is an old dog leash.

6. Simple White Patio Sofa

A white framed patio sofa with pale blue cushions on a terracotta patio outside a set of French doors. This one is a reader build from the Outdoor Sofa plan in Ana White’s Modern Comfort collection, and the builder made one change worth copying. They sized it to the cushions they found rather than to the plan, so it came out 84 inches wide instead of 72, which was wide enough that the matching love seat became unnecessary. Two days start to finish including paint and varnish drying time, using a compound miter saw, a Kreg jig and square head screws.

7. DIY Pallet Outdoor Daybed

Pallet outdoor daybed on castors with a blush mattress, black and white pillows and peach bolsters on a wooden deck

A pallet daybed on castors with a blush mattress, black and white patterned pillows and a peach bolster at each end, parked on a deck beside a turned leg coffee table. Castors on a daybed this size are not decoration. A pallet base with a mattress on it is genuinely heavy, and wheels are what let it move into shade at two in the afternoon and back against the fence at night. The blush and monochrome pillow mix is what keeps a pallet reading as styling rather than salvage. Shelterness features this one and points to Prudent Baby for the full instructions.

8. DIY Fainting Couch

Gray and white polka dot fainting couch with a scrolled wooden crest along the back, against a pale wall

A gray and white polka dot fainting couch with a scrolled wooden crest along the back, which is a far more ambitious shape than anything else here and still built from 1x4s. Reality Daydream sizes the frame around a standard crib mattress at 28 by 52 inches, making a 1×4 frame 54 by 29.5 inches with one end extended to 58 to carry the arm, over nine 28 inch slats. Kreg jig pocket holes keep every screw hidden so nothing catches on a passing sleeve. The scroll was drawn freehand in pencil and cut on a bandsaw.

9. DIY Pallet Upholstered Sectional Sofa Tutorial

Dark blue upholstered pallet sectional with yellow and white striped cushions on a decking terrace by a house

A dark blue pallet sectional with yellow and white striped seat cushions on a decking terrace, with a spare pallet still lying beside it. Easy Pallet Ideas covers the pallet frame in heavy cotton or canvas over high density foam, which is what turns bare pallets into something that reads as an upholstered piece rather than a stack of wood with a pad on it. The one instruction worth repeating is about the edges: pad the sharp pallet corners with fabric strips before the cover goes on, or they will wear through the covering from the inside.

10. Outdoor Sectional Sofa

Cedar toned 2x4 outdoor sectional sofa with taupe cushions and patterned pillows on a stone patio under an umbrella

A cedar toned 2×4 sofa with taupe cushions and patterned pillows, sitting on a stone patio under an umbrella. This is the one arm piece from Ana White’s 2×4 outdoor collection, and the collection is the point rather than this single sofa. Every piece in it is built from standard 2x4s with only two tools and sized around 24 by 24 inch cushions, so the one arm sofa, the armless section and the matching coffee table combine into a corner, an L or a U depending on the patio you are working with. Start with one and add pieces.

11. DIY Beefy Pallet Armless Outdoor Sofa

Heavy dark brown stained pallet sofa with a wide seat and tall solid plank back on a cracked concrete driveway

A heavy plank sofa in dark brown stain with a wide deep seat and a tall solid back, standing on a cracked concrete driveway. Armless is a deliberate choice rather than an omission, because losing both arms gains close to a foot of seat width on the same footprint, which is the difference between three people fitting and two. The finish is brown stain sealed with polyurethane. 101 Pallets presents this as a showcase of the finished piece rather than a tutorial, so no supplies list, pallet count or step is claimed.
